Onboard and Workshop Inspection / Overhaulting

Proper maintenance of your turbocharger is essential for its safe operation as it minimizes the possibilities of break-downs which can lead to technical, operational and commercial losses for the ship management company. Special attention must be given by the shipping company and the engine crew of the vessel to keep records of the overhauling intervals of each turbocharger and arrange its proper overhauling on time.

A normal overhauling procedure is described below:

1. Checking the records of the technical data of the turbocharger and the, attached to it, engine, and discussion with the engine officers about any abnormal behavior of them.
2. Dismantling of the required casings (air filter, air insert, gas admission), bearings, diffuser depending on the type of turbocharger, and rotor-shaft.
3. Cleaning of the dismantled parts.
4. Inspection of the cleaned parts according to manufacturer’s specifications (which can be visual or require a specialized method i.e. ultrasonic measurement of the thickness of the casings).
5. Replacement of the required parts (after agreement with the client).
6. Assembly of all the parts back to the turbocharger.
7. Measurement of the clearances and checking compliance with the manufacturer’s limits.

Balancing

Our balancing machines are capable of balancing rotors from 400g up to 2000kg. All rotors going out from our workshop, either as new supply units, reconditioned units oirt assembled inside a complete Turbocharger are balance checked & if necessary corrected according to manufacturer specifications. Our balancing machines are calibrated & certified on a yearly basis by an independent firm ensuring precision according to ISO norms.

Retor Dynamic Balancing

Dynamic balancing is a way of balancing machines by rotating parts quickly and measuring the imbalance using electronic equipment. The imbalance measured can then be corrected by adding or subtracting weight from the rotating parts until the vibration is reduced.

We provide balancing services to clients who have rotors, fans, impellers or shafts that need to be balanced dynamically. Our dynamic balancing machine can handle loads of up to 2000Kg, which is the finest grade of balance. After the job is completed, we will deliver all items back to you, with the addition of a balancing certificate highlighting the initial and residual out of balance readings.

Failure to balance the rotor periodically can result in vibrations that cause excessive bearing wear. In turn, the severe bearing wear can cause damage to the entire turbocharger.

Turbine Blade

A turbine blade is the individual component which makes up the turbine section of a gas turbine or steam turbine. The blades are responsible for extracting energy from the high temperature, high pressure gas produced by the combustor. The turbine blades are often the limiting component of gas turbines.
